Rohstoff Recycling Osnabrück GmbH has been operating a briquetting plant since early 1999 with which grinding slurry from the metal industry with a high metal content can be used as secondary raw material in steelworks.
Technical process
The RRO briquetting plant removes the hazardous substance potential from grinding slurry thus preparing this material for further processing in the electric furnaces of the steel industry as a substitute for scrap.
This process involves mixing the sludge with turnings, wich are also used as scrap in the steelworks. They serve as a base matrix for the grinding slurry.
The ratio of turnings to grinding slurry is 4 : 1. Under high pressure – 820 tonnes – the mixture is pressed into cylindrical shapes weighing between 15 and 20 kilograms. These briquettes are extremely hard and can therefore be used as secondary raw materials in the steel industry.
The outgoing emulsions and residual liquids are further processed in a downstream splitting plant. The pre-treated Waste water is directed to the municipal sewage network and residual oil is recycled for thermal applications.
